Dear Pupils /Parents and Carers,

Welcome to Year 5!

Our Year 5 topic question for this half term is:

Why are there docks in Salford?

In class we are going to be exploring what the Manchester Ship canal is, what the quays are used for now and how ships float.

 Pupils’ Home Learning Challenge!

Here are some ideas for this half term’s learning challenges! These are to be completed over this term and should be brought to school before Friday 14th October.

Remember you can complete as many challenges as you wish but everyone must present at least one.

Task 1 Research famous real pirates from the past and the ships that they sailed. Who were they? How big was their crew? What did there look like?
Task 2

Design and make your own set boat trump cards. Research different types of boats. (Use your book to keep your notes) Draw or print a picture of the boats. The create categories like SPEED…
Task 3 Draw and label a picture of what Salford Quays looks like now.
Task 4 Bake some Victorian oatcakes. These were a popular food for poor Victorians who would have been working at Manchester Ship canal.

We will be sending homework this half term on Fridays, to be completed for the following Tuesday. The homework will be mainly Year 5 spellings and times tables. Please continue to support your children with their reading (at least 10 minutes a night, 4 times a week).

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to come and see us.

We look forward to seeing the final product from your chosen challenge!
